Posted over 5 years ago by Dr. Irene Bean, FNAP, FAANP, FAAN

Please note that this is a great opportunity for Tennessee APRNs to represent our state by applying for opened positions with AANP.

Countdown to Opening of AANP Call for Nominations - The AANP Call for Nominations for the 2019 election will be issued next Thursday, November 1. The deadline for nomination applications to be received by AANP is November 30, 2018. AANP members in good standing for the 12 months prior to November 1, 2018 (with no lapse in membership), are eligible to submit their information for consideration as a candidate for the 2019 election. The term of office for the board of directors and state representatives is two years and is three years for members of the Nomination Council. All elected officers will begin their term at the close of the 2019 AANP National Conference, which will be held in Indianapolis, June 18–23, 2019.

Mary Wakefield to Speak at the 2019 Health Policy Conference! - We are excited to announce that Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, FAAN, has accepted AANP’s invitation to speak at the 2019 Health Policy Conference. Dr. Wakefield is the former Acting Deputy Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and former Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

Throughout her career, Dr. Wakefield has worked to improve access to health care for underserved populations, from rural to global health. Under her leadership, HRSA took steps to increase and diversify the health care workforce, build up a home visiting program to bring health workers to vulnerable mothers and children and further spread the use of telemedicine in rural areas. She was the first nurse to lead that division.

On Monday, February 4, Dr. Wakefield will speak to conference attendees on "The Importance of NPs in Primary Care."

Information and registration for the 2019 AANP Health Policy Conference are available on the conference website. This conference has sold out several years in a row, and registration slots are already filling up faster than ever before. Register now!

AANP Commends President’s Signing of Critical Opioid Legislation - Today, AANP released the following statement after President Donald Trump signed a comprehensive package of anti-opioid bills into law with a key provision enabling the NP workforce to continue to expand access to Medication Assisted Treatments (MATs) for opioid-addicted patients nationwide:

“Recognizing the ongoing impact of the opioid crisis, Congress and the President have moved quickly to get this critical legislation across the finish line,” said AANP President Joyce Knestrick, PhD, C-FNP, APRN, FAANP. “We applaud their actions, which acknowledge the vital role nurse practitioners play in treating patients with opioid use disorder with Medication Assisted Treatments (MATs). As the law takes effect, AANP is confident that the number of America’s NPs who are waivered to prescribe MATs will continue to increase, and that NPs will help turn the tide of opioid addiction in communities nationwide.”

Member Benefit of the Week - AANP members enjoy free access to the AANP CE Center, which contains educational activities designed to help NPs achieve professional growth and excellence in clinical practice.

Great Ways to Celebrate NP Week - The NP Week Resource Guide is available for your use in planning a memorable week showcasing NPs in your community. Share a Story - AANP’s national multimedia campaign, "We Choose NPs," is engaging policymakers, citizens and communities to strengthen patient awareness of the high-quality health care NPs deliver in over one billion patient visits each year. To increase awareness of NPs and support our campaign, AANP is in search of great stories from patients who choose an NP as their primary care provider. Please share your patient stories. If your story is selected, we will contact you to seek approval for your patient’s inclusion on the We Choose NPs website, in NP Health Tips emails or perhaps in a television spot. Thank you for your participation and support.
